Vintage, Rare “Challenge Machinery Company” Letterpress Type High Gauge On offer is a vintage, Challenge Machinery Company Type Gauge. This gauge allows for a letterpress printer to measure wood or metal type to see how it compares to the standard for American type high (0.918”). We call the gauge “rare” because there are many of these gauges available, but it is hard to find one that has the Challenge Machinery Company information still engraved on it. Because... of this, it will make a nice collector’s item. As old as it is and like most of these gauges it can still actually be used for by a letterpress printer! The gauge shows its age, having dings and scratches along with a chip in one corner. As with most tools from this period, even though it has been well used, it is as solid as ever and will still serve its original purpose very well. The type thickness indicator marks are clear and readable. The gauge still measures the proper thickness. This is a wonderful piece for a printer or a collector!
