Item Description: Unusual carved wood figure of Madonnaholding a broom called the “Madonna della Scopa” or Madonna of the Broom. Thestatue depicts the miraculous apparition in which the Virgin Mary is said tohave cleaned out an abandoned Italian chapel. Mary’s halo is gilded and thereare bands of gilt on the hems of her cape and robe, Approximate Dimensions: 7 inches tall, base is 2-1/8inches wide and 2-1/8 inches deep. Maker & Other Marks: Stamped on the bottom HAND MADE INI...TALY. Has small foil tag that reads GOLDSCHEIDER and MADE IN ITALY, Medium: Condition: Various areas of wear including theback of her cape and a tiny chip out of the rim of her gold halo (see photo). Built in the fifteenth century, (thechapel) was initially much smaller than it is today, with the most recentextension added at the beginning of the twentieth century. Religiousfrescoes cover its inner walls.
