Japanese Kiseru Pipe this antique pipe is from the late 1800'sin very good condition. patina to the brass and stemhand painted circular patterns It is 7 1/2" long These types of pipes are commonly mistaken for "illicit" pipes but were used for tobacco predominantly.the small bowls were made to put a pinch or two of tobacco and some were great signs of wealth or adulthoodFine pipes were brought out to guests to share in a tobacco cer...emony (tabaka-do). With very precise customs and actions between parties. Wabi -sabi "Medicine" came to Japan from China and was used for medicinalpurposes; a puff on a pipe like these eased backaches and alleviated migraines.After years of use, we think these little pipes have developed a certainaesthetic known in Japan as wabi-sabi.
Wabi-sabi is the marriage of two old aesthetic ideals: wabi, which connotes a kind of rustic, simplicity, and sabi, which celebratesthe “bloom of time.” Leonard Koren, who wrote a whole book about it, describeswabi-sabi as “a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete.” Theidea is deeply tied to Buddhist philosophy, and manifests itself in design asasymmetry, simplicity and modesty. Wabi-sabi is the cracked cup, the wiltedflower, the frayed edge of a cloth and the weathered wood of an old gate. So thinktwice before you throw away your chipped dishware
