• “THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING: A NOVEL”
 (HARPER & ROW, 1984)

• BY MILAN KUNDERA

• “KUNDERA is a virtuoso…. A work of the boldest mastery, originality, and richness.”—ELIZABETH HARDWICK, VANITY FAIR • “Brilliant…. A work of high modernist playfulness and deep pathos.”
—JANET MALCOLM, NEW YORK... REVIEW OF BOOKS

• “KUNDERA has raised the novel of ideas to a new level of dreamlike lyricism and emotional intensity."
—JIM MILLER, NEWSWEEK • “The mind MR. KUNDERA puts on display is truly formidable…. He has a first-rate mind and, like BERNARD SHAW, the capacity to argue both sides of a question.”
—E.L. DOCTOROW, NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW • “I can’t remember precisely when I read my first KUNDERA or which it was, because once I had started I couldn’t stop until I emptied them all. Fresh from the English classics at Oxford…. I was drawn into a restless world of ideas and characters in which nothing is how we first perceive it, and meaning and motive are bent like light refracting through a prism. It was heady stuff, original and subversive…. This [THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING] is a shamelessly clever book – at times a little cold – but exhilaratingly subversive and funny. KUNDERA takes you by the scruff of the neck and shakes you pitilessly: ‘Is that what you really believe? Is that what you are like?” Can you ask more of a novel?”—ANDREW WILLIAMS, THE INDEPENDENT (UK) • “KUNDERA’s ability to interweave philosophy, history, dreams and romance into his stories, whilst also keeping them incredibly readable is a testament to his originality and extraordinary talent.”—CLAIRE HAYWARD, THE CULTURE TRIP (WEBSITE) • “If one of the overriding characteristics of the experimental point of view (usually white and male) fiction writer who peaked sometime between the 1970s and 1990s tends to be a lack of reverence for intricate character development in favor of feats of language and form,  KUNDERA does not fit in, quite, on this playground…. Rather, it is fascinating that KUNDERA [in THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING] should develop Tomas—as well as his wife Teresa and lover Sabina—in such profound and loving depth only to constantly remind us that they are novelistic creations he came up with while looking across a courtyard.”—GINA FRANGELLO, LOS ANGELES REVIEW OF BOOKS • “The narrative concerns a young Czech physician and his relationship with two women—the one he loves, and the one he loves to bed…. All the characters are well-drawn and complex. They move and behave with a rational sense of self. It is 1960s Czechoslovakia, and all are suffering under the terror of the KGB-styled National Front and the Soviet-inspired Federal Assembly…. But KUNDERA’s work is no political treatise; nor is it some cold and fact-based accounting of past sexual conquests. It is one of the warmest novels I have ever read, and it proves MILAN KUNDERA a genuine master of the printed word, equal to JOHN UPDIKE or TOM WOLFE…perhaps a blending of ARTHUR KOESTLER and HENRY MILLER (but so much more spirit than MILLER could ever imagine.)…. THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING is a masterpiece of contemporary fiction.”
