Hi! You're looking at my amazing Cameo choker necklace. I believe it's Whitby jet, but it could be vulanite. Jet can be found in many countries but the best quality jet comes from Whitby Bay in Yorkshire, England. Whitby jet was used predominately to make mourning jewellery. Mourning jewellery was very popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras and served as a touchstone to remember loved ones who had passed before photographs were readily available. Queen Victoria herself ...popularized Whitby jet; when her beloved Albert died in 1861 she took to wearing mourning dress and jewellery and she favoured Whitby jet. So popular was it in fact that it was the only jewellery allowed to be worn in court at that time! This is a wonderful example of mourning jewellery. It is decorated with cameo panels and a central decorative panel. The clasp is a hook clasp which is hidden when worn by a matching panel to the central one at the front. A slight nibble to the 'clasp' panel but hardly noticeable. Good antique condition.
Length of necklace: 38.5 cm OR 15.2 inches.
Measurements of cameo panels: 2.0 x 1.4 x 0.5 cm OR 0.8 x 0.6 x 0.2 inches.
Measurements of central panel: 4.0 x 2.8 x 1.3 OR 1.6 x 1.1 x 0.5 inches.
Weight: 41.99 grams.
