~ Historical Background ~
Vogue magazine began offering a weekly pattern in itsFebruary 23, 1899 issue.  This patternwas identified simply as "No. 1" and was a Louis XV Jacket.   Beginning with that issue, a full page wasdedicated to the weekly pattern and included an illustration of front and back, detailed construction information, a coupon with which to order it, and a listof previously offered patterns that may be ordered. Weekly patterns were still being offered in July 1906, withPattern No. 388 offered in the July 26, 1906 issue.   By this time "Cut to Order Patterns" werealso being offered:  "Other PatternsIllustrated in this Department" including "Flat Patterns, Pinned Patterns, Waistsand Jackets" were cut to order in various sizes. These were identified withpattern numbers in the 1000 range, with numbers 1023 through 1028 offered inthis July 26 issue.  By April 18, 1907, multiple patterns were offered, sometimesup to 5 per issue, and the feature was upgraded to "Vogue Pattern Department."   Pattern numbers in this issue ranged 1191 to1194, were duct to order in sizes from 34 to 40 bust,  and were priced at 50 cents for a waist orskirt.  Vogue magazine was purchased by Conde Nast in 1909 and "VoguePattern Company" was formed in 1914, at which time the patterns were sold indepartment stores.   The Vogue Couturierpatterns were first published beginning in 1931.
