This locomotive was inall probability t...he best steam locomotive ever owned by the B&M in anymeasure, and most deserving of the tribute paid by an entire issue. Includedare 46 R-1 photos, plus those of the competition, a piece on how the engineswere named by school-children, including the namers names, a stat sheet comparingthese with other similar machines and Sources for further information. Followedby The Adventure of the 4112 by Kenneth F. McCall and then many great R-1photos by Johnson, Hale, Goodwin, Tobey and Baxter, with a fine Richard Symmesdrawing on the rear cover. Overall, there are some 58 illustrations of these1935-41 Baldwins and their competitors and helpmates in this issue. If you area modeler, or curious like me, you'll enjoy the background information in thesephotos as much as the main subject. Check out those shots at Ayer, Fitchburgand East Deerfield. Also this issue will interest Baltimore & Ohio RRhistorians as many of these machines went on to serve that fine road until 1958after their services were no longer required by the B&M. Note that the EMDFT's that replaced the R-1's on the B&M had all gone to scrap while some ofthe R-1's were still running on the B&O! This magazine is in excellent, museum-quality condition.
