This exceptionally rare and fascinating, Civil War Soldier CDV Photo measures approx. 2 1/2" by 4" (including the original, square cornered card, gold rule border card mount). The CDV features a full length, standing portrait of a Union Army Cavalry Soldier wearing a shell jacket, light colored regulation trouser,... knee high leather boots and a wonderful Hardee Hat that appears to be significantly oversized given his small stature. The Cavalryman cradles his sheathed sword in the crook of his right arm.
While the Soldier is not identified in any way, the back of the mount carries the mark of the photographer – F. Mowrey of Rutland, Vermont and the Cavalryman’s Hardee Hat features insignia that identifies him as a member of Company H of the 1st Vermont Cavalry.
This Photograph has perplexed us ever since we purchased it. The Cavalryman pictured is EXCEPTIONALLY short – a hair’s breath taller than a dwarf and MUCH shorter than any Cavalry Soldier we have ever seen. The Photo came to us with a late 19th century note that read “I think that this is father’s cousin Byron”, however, there were only 2 soldiers in the 1st Vermont Cavalry named Byron and neither served in Company H. We thought that the fact that this Cavalry Soldier’s short stature might have been a subject of some note yet we have been unable to uncover any information regarding any “little person” that served in the 1st Vermont Cavalry. Any information regarding the identity of the Vermont Cavalryman would be GREATLY appreciated.
This very rare and VERY interesting, CDV Portrait Photo of a Union Army, Civil War Cavalry Soldier is in excellent condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. Both the Photo and the card mount are generally clean and crisp and very well preserved.
An exceptionally rare and original, 1860's CDV Photograph of a Union Civil War Vermont Cavalry Soldier who appears to be a Dwarf / “Little Person” and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
