HMS Dauntless was a Danae-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was built by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company of Jarrow, launched on 10 April 1918 and commissioned on 22 November 1918. Completed too late... to see action in the First World War, in 1919 she was assigned to operate in the Baltic Sea against the Bolshevik revolutionaries in Russia. She was then on detached service in the West Indies. Following this assignment she was attached to the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet for the following five years. Dauntless was a member of the Cruise of the Special Service Squadron, also known as the 'Empire Cruise', of 1923/24.

Norman Jolley joined the Royal Marines as a 2nd Lieutenant in October 1912, and became a Lieutenant, RMLI, in September 1914. Soon after the outbreak of World War I, he joined HMS Jupiter and received the 3rd Class of the Order of St. Stanislaus of Russia for services whilst that ship was on detached service in the White Sea in the early part of 1915. He was a subaltern in HMS Canada in 1915-17 and was present at the Battle of Jutland. On promotion to Captain in the middle of 1917, he joined HMS Calypso in the Sixth Light Cruiser Squadron of the Grand Fleet and served in her until being posted to a staff appointment in Malta in June, 1918. On return from Malta he served in the Naval Intelligence Division of the Admiralty from 1919-20.He was Adjutant of the Plymouth Division from 1923-26 and graduated at the Staff College, Camberley, in 1930. He was Military Instructor at the Depot, 1931-33, and instructor at the RN Staff College, Greenwich, 1933-36. In January 1936, he took up the appointment of DAAG at the RM Office and held this appointment until shortly after the outbreak of World War II. He was AAG, RM for a time in 1940, when he took command of 103 Brigade of the R.M. Division. He was on special service from 1942 until July, 1943, when he became Colonel Commandant of the Depot RM. General Jolley was placed on the retired list late in 1943, but was retained for service until September 1945. Between 1944 and 1945 he held an appointment at the Headquarters of the Naval Section of the Control Commission in NW Europe. After reverting to the retired list in October, 1945, he became Secretary and Administration Officer at the Imperial Defence College and held this appointment until his death. General Jolley became a C.B.E. in the New Year's Honours List, 1944.
