USS LEXINGTON CV-16 United States Navy Aircraft Carrier first day cover honoring the carrier's outstanding World War II service. Cover postmarked from Honolulu, Hawaii dated June 11, 2019.Color photo of the ship printed on cachet #9494 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964.Cover prepared on an Archive Quality Envelope without gum on flap. Cover with a DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift!USS Lexington: Thi...s 820 foot Essex Class attack carrier was commissioned in 1943 and earned eleven WWII Battle Stars and a Presidential Unit Citation in the Pacific Theater. She was placed in reserve in 1947 and re-commissioned in 1955 after major reconstruction to add an angled flight deck, new island and equipment to handle jet aircraft.She served in the Far East until ordered to flight training ship duty in 1962 out of Pensacola. This duty lasted for 22 years! with many Vietnam War pilots trained aboard. She was decommissioned in 1991 and transferred to her museum status in 1992. The proud vessel is now open to the public at Corpus Christi, Texas with over a dozen Navy aircraft on the flight deck. They were moved below during the 2017 hurricane that hit Texas.
