For sale is an incredible antique Swiss carved "Black Forest" entry-bench hall-tree with mirror. This is an antique, not some kind of reproduction. Items with carved bears like this were made in Brienz Switzerland in the 1800s and very early 1900s, this piece is from that period. It measures 84" tall, 63 1/4" wide and 26" deep. The bears measure just under 40" tall. The top of the bench is 18". There are some shrinkage cracks in this piece as is normal with original examples.
Th...e example in this listing has everything, a bench with large bears on both side, the tree with a cub, and a mirror. I have never seen all of these elements combined in an example that was not a later reproduction.
The quality of carving in this piece is excellent. For a "Black Forest" item like this, the retail price by a dealer that works with these would be well over $30, 000. In the genre of carved "Black Forest" pieces incorporating bears, I do not think you will ever be able to find a better example.
IMPORTANT SHIPPING INFORMATION: This piece is being sold as local pickup only. I expect payment fairly soon after it sells but I will be glad to store this piece for a few months if necessary while the buyer finds a shipper that they are comfortable with. Uship may be worth looking into, using a shipper with excellent feedback. The entry bench is located about 20 miles north of Denver Colorado 80516. I can only guess at the entry bench's weight maybe around 225 lbs.
I believe the entry bench/hall tree is in excellent condition for being over a hundred years old. Also, for how involved this piece is, it is remarkable that it is complete. The entry piece is also very sturdy and provides a very solid bench for two or more. I have had a couple of people ask me questions about its condition. It can be hard to describe details about something like shrinkage cracks without seeing pictures with it. So I have taken addition pictures that I believe will help give a decent condition report. If you would like to, message me and I will send you 3 return messages with 5 additional pictures each and detailed descriptions.
