Les Vases de Sèvres, 18th and 19th century, French book
This superb hardcover book of 320 pages and over 350 color illustrations present the French Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Sèvres founded in 1740 at Vincennes.
Since then she has never stopped making vases, designed by the greatest artists and realized with all the care these porcelain are able.
Monarchs and then the Republic have succeeded without ever renounc...ing promote the development of these beautiful and impressive objects. We can not put flowers: they have covers and they leak. They only exist by and for their beauty. They are like high fashion, this so French specialty.
The manufacture has always kept its archives; for forty years, honorary director of the Archives, Tamara Préaud, has widely opened the reserves. Specialists were able to gather an unprecedented documentation. Who can claim to know in detail the circumstances of the old creation of works of art as numerous and complex?
Annette Faÿ-Hallé, curator and director of the National Museum of Ceramics in Sèvres from 1970 to 2009 supervised the publication of this book, written by the greatest French, American, English, German scientists, museum curators, antique dealers, academics.
All have approached these vases with the most varied views, reflecting their fascination with this impressive production.
With over 350 illustrations, this book shows the diversity dominated by the continuous search for perfection.
A very accurate directory of marks and signatures of the manufacture and marks of the artists from 1740 to 2013 has been added, so that everyone can identify dates and names of the authors of Sèvres porcelain.
Such marks are a complex but readable code, which allows us to date the Sèvres porcelain to know who produced them and often find them in various ancient documents of the factory. These references are constitutive of the value and scarcity of these works of art.
