This very rare and original, albumen CDV Photograph measures approx. 2 1/4” ...by 3 1/2” and is mounted on its original, square corner, gold rule border, CDV Card Mount (card measures approx 2 1/4" by 4").
This original, full length, standing portrait pictures Kelly wearing a civilian frock coat and holding a straw boater in his left hand. Kelly has inscribed the mount on the verso “Yours Truly / James P. Kelly / A.A. Paymaster / U.S.N.”. The back of the mount carries the mark of New Orleans, Louisiana photographer J. A. Sheldon as well as a partial 2 cent Internal Revenue Service Tax Stamp.
James P. Kelly was not found recorded in the Navy List but was found on the list of officers of Mississippi Squadron – he was employed at Vicksburg, July 13, 1863 and assigned to the Ironclad Steamer USS Lafayette (4th Rate).
This very rare and original, CDV Portrait of Civil War Union Navy Officer James P. Kelly is in excellent condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality good. Both the Image and the card mount are clean and crisp and well preserved. The Tax Stamp on the reverse is damaged.
