This scarce andcolorful card is one in a series of 50 Bird cards issuedby the Sen-Sen Chicklet Company of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. It should be notedthat the Fleer Gum Company ownedthis company. The series is entitled"Accurate Bird Studies ", and is listedas series number E225 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue. There are twovariations of the front of the cards, on that features the word “Chicklets”included with the bird illustration, and one variation with out the “C...hicklets”word. Although no guide that I know of list a dateof issue I have always assumed it tobe in the 1920’s era and possible earlier. Each card features a picture of the bird and it’segg on the front of the card. Althoughthese images are every bit as good as Audubon Images, they were in fact done bythe artist named Casper Emerson. The back features a brief description of thebird and its habits which was written by W.D. Carpenter a well know ornithologistat the time. The back also tells how onecould procure an album that featuredall of these bird images free from the company (the album identifies who theartist was and who did the descriptions of the bird). Thiscard features a RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRD , and does not have “Chicklets” onthe front . The card measures 3 1/4 inches by 1 1/4 inches approx. The card does have some edge and corner wearand small spot of print loss to the back, but it is free from major creases. I have scannedthe front and back of the card fairly large so you can determine the conditionfor yourself. This is a relatively scarce card.
