PUSS IN BOOTS (Celebrity, 1934) Walt Disney’s close associate Ub Iwerks went out on his own to produce a series of color cartoons in 1933 — this when color of any kind in cartoons was rarely seen. The Iwerks "ComiColor" cartoons were adaptations of famous children’s stories and this one is typical. When a roving musician saves three kittens from drowning, he earns the gratitude and friendship of the adventurous cat Puss in Boots. The Ogre has kidnapped the Princess... (miniaturizing her into a bird) and the young man storms the Ogre’s cave to rescue her. The Ogre captures him, leaving Puss in Boots to trick the Ogre and defeat him. Master animator Ub Iwerks really understood the application of color in cartoons when it was still experimental, and made maximum use of the two-color Cinecolor palette. The static screen shots do the film only faint justice — the storybook action is something to behold in motion, and the Cinecolor is enchanting, boasting a different and novel spectrum of colors. With the animation by Ub Iwerks, Jimmie Culhane, and Al Eugster, and the orchestra score directed by Carl Stalling (later of the Warner Bros. cartoons), this one is recommended for cartoon historians, as well as being a familiar fable told simply and vividly for family audiences. Running time: 7 minutes. Original Cinecolor print (1945 Eastman) with orange and blue emulsions. Castle Films had PUSS IN BOOTS in print for 27 years in black-and-white, but only nine years in color (1942 to 1951), so the 16mm sound version in Cinecolor is a rare title as Castle Films go. Good to very good condition (“excellent” in projection): some light surface wear; perforations repaired in the titles and 12 individual perforations repaired in the film proper; one splice in the film proper. A very nice collectible, and the film is sharper than our screen shots. Many of the Comicolor cartoons were later printed in Eastmancolor, which is subject to fading, but PUSS IN BOOTS is among the rare Iwerks titles (with fewer surviving prints), and this Cinecolor original won't fade on you!
