THE TOOTH WILL OUT (Columbia, 1951) The Three Stooges, being chased down the street by an irate Emil Sitka, stumble into a dental school. The doctor is Vernon Dent and his assistant is Margie Liszt, an enthusiastic member of the Columbia two-reel unit who wears a clock-stopping makeup! The Stooges try manufacturing a set of dentures, which shows alarming signs of life — it even sings, in the voice of Vernon Dent, and harmonizes with the Stooges in Moe Ho...ward’s own composition “I Made a Lucky Strike When I Found You.” Dr. Shemp Howard and his associates are soon practicing (ahem) on loose-limbed Slim Gaut and western badman Dick Curtis. Director Edward Bernds lets the Stooges improvise freely. Bernds filmed some of the action for his Stooge comedy Merry Mavericks; that film ran too long but the sequence was too good to cut, so Bernds wrote the dental-school framework around it. Former rental print (1959 Kodak original) sustained damage at the beginning; we saved the main titles, but the first gag is missing (55 seconds). Fortunately the second gag is simply a repeat of the first gag, so you miss nothing plotwise. Excellent condition from there out, and the image is sharp and bright (and better than our screen shots).
