Item History & Price
I'M GRAHAM. I AM RETIRED AND HAVE HAD PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN CLOCK REPAIR AND RESTORATION. I NOW RESTORE ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE CLOCKS AS AN INTEREST IN MY SPARE TIME. I SPECIALISE IN CARRIAGE CLOCKS. THIS VINTAGE CARRIAGE CLOCK IS A FAIRLY NEW REPRODUCTION MADE BY L'EPEE (WHICH STILL TRADES AS A FRENCH COMPANY BUT IS NOW OWNED BY A SWISS HOLDING COMPANY). ALTHOUGH I SPECIALISE IN ANTIQUE CARRIAGE CLOCKS, I DO OCCASIONALLY ACQUIRE A NEWER REPRODUCTION ...AND I ENJOY WORKING ON THEM AS THEY ARE SO BEAUTIFULLY MADE. I HAVE JUST CLEANED AND SERVICED IT JUST AS I WOULD HAVE DONE WITH AN ANTIQUE. I REMAIN AGREEABLY SURPRISED BY THE QUALITY OF THE CRAFTSMANSHIP! IT REALLY IS BEAUTIFULLY MADE. SIZE: Height (with handle folded down) 12.5 cms (5 inches); Width 8 cms (3 inches); Depth 7 cms (2 3/4 inches). CASE: Good quality brass with folding solid brass handle. As can be seen from the pictures, the brass handle, pillars and rear door frame appear black: this is tarnish. As the effect is in my view not unattractive, I chose to leave it rather than polish it out. The rear door opens and closes with satisfying precision - a good indication that the clock has not been dropped in the past or suffered any other damage! Judging by the immaculate state of all the assembly screws, this was the first time the case had been taken apart since the clock was made. Now, it has a lustrous patina without looking over-polished: this will last for years before it needs cleaning again. . MOVEMENT : Very well engineered good quality solid brass 8-day movement with a 7 jeweled lever escapement which works robustly with excellent amplitude and a quiet tick. It is modelled faithfully on the original French 0bis style movement. It is stamped on the back plate with the L'Epee trade mark and is inscribed "Made in France 11 eleven jewels". After checking it carefully for wear (none found), I cleaned and oiled the movement and the escapement with appropriate clock oil. It now works perfectly and will not need servicing again for years. DIAL: Brilliant white in perfect original condition. The chapter ring and bold Roman numerals are crisp and clean and as good as when the clock left the factory. Each five minute marker on the chapter ring is marked with arabic numerals. The delicate polished blued steel moon pattern hands are in perfect condition. GLASSES: All five thick beveled glasses are in perfect condition. KEY: The clock comes with a new double-ended brass key: one end winds the 8-day movement and the other is for adjusting the hands. INSTRUCTIONS: I will enclose simple instructions explaining how to get the clock started if it has stopped during its journey through the post. This is an extremely well engineered vintage carriage clock in excellent original condition. Eye-catching on display. The clock is surprisingly heavy for its size. This is reflected in the shipping costs - PACKAGING (new double boxes) and POSTAGE (Special Delivery, tracked & insured): UK £10.00; EU £20.00 (approx. 23 Euros); Elsewhere £30.00I pack well, post promptly, and have 100% positive feedback on eBay - which I would urge you to read before bidding.
