19th c Tibetan Buddhist butter lamps, set of four, all hand-made and rare, with remnants of congealed Yak butter remaining on them (traditionally, clarified Yak butter was used as fuel). These lamps were ubiquitous in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and temples throughout the Himalayas and elsewhere. They were used as devotional tools and aides in meditation...as in 'dispelling the darkness of the mind'. I acquired these in Dharamsala, N India - t...he present home of the Dalai Lama - late last century. In subsequent visits, only machine-made copies were to be found...all alike, of course. The old Tibetan artifacts are rapidly disappearing. Each is approx 2 1/2" in height.
