Postcard shows S.S. "Britannic" during the Second Boer War as a H.M.T. (Hired Military Transport) troop carrier leaving Table Bay. At the top is printed A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU followed by an original signature by her captain Bertram Fox Hayes. The card is postmarked Southampton 31st December 1901 and addressed to possibly his father Joseph Barry Hayes.
Known as a sailo...r of the Bulldog Breed Bertram Fox Hayes was born in 1864 joining the White Star Line in 1898. He was one of their most successful captains having never had an accident in his entire career. He captained S.S. Britannic as a troop carrier during the Second Boer War and the "Olympic" as a troop carrier in WW1 saving a French cruiser crew and on another occasion ramming and sinking a German submarine. In 1919 he bought home R.M.S."Majestic" (Bismark) from Germany as reparation to Britain for the war. In 1920 he was knighted and in 1922 made Commodore of the White Star Fleet commanding the "Majestic" on her maiden voyage in the same year. He retired in 1924 at the age of 60.
