Antique 19th C Brass Christmas Sleigh Bell W/ 1890’s Red Calico Bow AAFA

Living in the cornfields and Prairies of the Midwest I often find broken strands of antique brass sleigh bells at farm auctions and estate sales. They are often found in the barn where they’ve stayed hidden for over a century. The leather is deteriorated beyond repair, but the bells are in great condition, only needing a good cleaning and fast polish. They date from the late 19th Century when most farmers had sleighs and carriages and used the bells on the horses for the ...lively sound and to alert others after dark that they were near by.
Antique brass sleigh bells have such a wonderful sound, not replicated by bells sold today. The bells I sell are called “petal” bells because of the unique imprint on each bell. I make a ribbon out of antique calico fabric made from the 1880’s to the early 1900’s in order to hang the bell.
