Canaan is a town in Essex County, Vermont, located at the confluence of the Connecticut River and Halls Stream. It is the northeastern most town in Vermont, bordered by the Canadian province of Quebec to the north and the U.S. state of New Hampshire to the east. (It is one of two towns in Vermont to share a border with both another state and Canada, the other such town being Alburgh in the northwestern corner.) Canaan is also the only town in Vermont to s...hare a land border with New Hampshire as the Connecticut River defines the state line from Canaan south. Since the start of the 20th century, Canaan has lost many logging jobs and most family farms. Tourism is now an important part of the local economy. I am not sure if Lake Wallis is in or near Cannan. I could not find any information on the Lake or Marshalls Cabins either. This real photo is unaccredited and dated 1936. It captures two of Marshall’s cabins on the lake with the Vermont Mountains in the distance. It is in good condition with minor wear on the corners and edges. The image is clean and clear except for a photo flaw, just below the first house. It was taken at sunset with the high contrast you get at that time. The reverse shows its age but is fairly clean. The colors on the images are a more neutral B&W than the scanUnless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated.
