I have been advised that this could also be a Vintage Car Exhaust Whistle. Which ever of the two this is it's a very rare item.
Overall 8" x 8" Weighs 1.2 kilos
They fitted on the end of the exhaust pipe and when the driver wanted to sound a warning he would close the cable operated flap valve and the whistle would sound quite strongly. They were used before cars routinely had electrical systems bu...t being at the back of the vehicle they were not ideal
Ships’ steam whistles were powered by steam lines from the boilers. They were used to signal other ships or the shore, to announce a vessel’s presence or its intentions. Whistles were especially useful when approaching or leaving a port or landing, or in foggy or dark waters.
Great original piece. No major damage, a few dints and marks commensurate with age.
