The uniquely turned legs arethe very best. The BOLDLY AND THICK CUT shaped saddle seat and side stretchersand shaped center stretcher are classic Tracy School. The carved and stem bentcrest is of hickory and the highly Bulbous turned spindles are unique to theTracy School. IT HAS A WONDERFUL AND DRAMATIC SPLAY OF THE LEGS.The TRACY SCHOOL isperhaps the best known Connecticut Windsor chair maker's of the 18th Century. There examples are considered the pinnacle of Windsor chair making. The Eastern Connecticut-Rhode Island border region was thehome of a number of Windsor chair makers during and after the AmericanRevolution. A whole school ofchair making evolved under one family led by Ebenezer Tracy. The captain, wholived and worked in Lisbon, created a unique and beautiful style, one marked bybold turnings, widely splayed legs and painstakingly carved seats. The captain, his three sons, two sons-in-law, and various apprentices created thousands ofhighly distinctive chairs in various forms - writing arm, fan back, bow back, continuous arm and settee, among others. Today, surviving Tracy chairs arehighly prized by collectors. For a similar example see, "The Windsor Stylein America", by Charles Santore. Also, see the front picture of Santore'sbook for the exact turnings on the legs and saddle seat. The condition is as follows:All the components are original except possibly the second back spindle from the right. The feet and legs and allthe spindles are intact. The feet are good height with only the usual loss over 225years of use. There are noadditions or restorations other than these I have listed. There are two verytight lines on the back side of the bow near the center. It is still verystrong and does not go through into the front. Also, there is an old nailrepair to the right side where the back rail enters the seat, (it too isstrong). The second back spindle from the right may be an old replacement. On the bow there is a section where one of the spindles goes through it with a small missing piece of wood. Some of the joints may be a little loose from being over 200+ years old.For a similar example see, "The Windsor Style inAmerica", by Charles Santore.IT HAS NOT BEEN ENDED OUT AND ALL THE FEET ARE ORIGINAL.This great chair stands 37 1/2" tall. The seat heightis a full 17" tall. Typical wear associated with the age of the item.
