Design Spectracolor Black-Barrelled Colored Pencils With Case This auction is for 56 of an original set of 60 Design Spectracolor Colored Pencils with their vinyl case. These pencils have wooden barrels which are dyed black throughout so even the interior of the barrels is black. This series appears to be more rare and sought after than their counterparts with the natural cedar barrel interiors. Both series of pencils have barrels which are painted black on the exterior..., with small, color-coded caps on their ends. Known for their opaque, pigmented cores, brilliant color and consistent core formulation, these pencils were also a preference of artists for their smooth, buttery application, and exceptional blending and shading qualities. According to descriptions from the packaging for the pencils, the colors are lightfast and fade-resistant.Most of them are still pretty close to their original length, as I have not used them excessively over the years - see photos for details of the various lengths. The shortest ones (Orange, Light Green, Sepia, and White) are still at least 6 inches long. I have photographed some of them alongside some of the others for scale. Somehow four pencils from the set have gotten lost over the years. Though I'm very careful with my art supplies, things sometimes get lost after 20-plus years.The vinyl case is still in good shape with no tears or breaks and the velcro fasteners still hold it closed, though not as tightly as they did years ago. It can be stood up to be used, though I've rarely used it that way. In many of the sales of these pencils I have seen, the vinyl cases are either lost or noticeably damaged.

Spectracolors were first made by the Venus Pencil Company, formerly the American Pencil Company. Venus was bought out by Faber-Castell in 1973. At some point Berol apparently acquired the North American Spectracolor line of colors and their names, which eventually became merged with the Prismacolor line. From what I could find, Spectracolors were discontinued some time around 1999. Looking around on eBay and other sites I found that Faber-Castell’s name is imprinted on some iterations of the Design Spectracolor brand - it is not on these. I have seen outer packaging for some of these pencils with the manufacturer shown as "Eberhard Faber", others list the manufacturer as "Faber-Castell". These pencils are marked "USA".Below is a list of all the colors in this set as well as a list of the "missing" pencils.
