This is a a beautiful Japanese Meiji, c1900. It is a wooden kiseruzutsu and tonkotsu, pipe case and tobacco pouch. The tonkotsu (vessel for tobacco) is an amusing carving of daruma, the founder of the zen buddhism. It is said that he meditated during nine years; in the end he strongly yawned and rose his arms! The large face lid can be removed from the tonkotsu and is hanging on string. The kiseruzutsu (pipe holder) is carved in the shape of ashinaga (long-legged companion of his long...-armed counterpart tenaga, who both lived as skillful fishermen on an island).
