DescriptionUp for your consideration is a 18th Century Japanese hand-carved netsuke depicting a Chinese general Kwanyu, who was one of three heroes of Han Dynasty (2nd centur...y BC) and was later raised to immortality and deified as God of War. He played a prominent role in the Civil War, which led to the fall of the Han Dynasty and the establishment of the Three Kingdoms era. He fought with people and with evil forces, thanks to which he is also known as the conqueror of demons. Here, Kwanyu is shown preparing for the battle in a traditional long military vestment, holding a halberd and stroking his beard with his left hand. This is a very rare type of sectional netsuke, when the legs and boots are carved separately. As with most netsuke of this type, the legs and boots of the attached netuske have not been preserved, due to the venerable age of the piece. Similar netsuke were sold at Sotheby's and Bonhams, for example, on 05/11/2009, lot 26, and on 09/20/1979, lot 31.
