LYMANBYXBE, COLORADO ARTIST, VTG HAND-SIGNED ORIG ETCHING “LONGS FROM FISH CREEK.” Bornin Pittsfield, Illinois, Lyman Byxbe (1886-1980) began at an early age to teachhimself to draw. He became a successful commercial artist in Omaha, Nebraska, where he studied the art of etching under Mark Levings, anarchitect. In 1938 Mr. Byxbe moved to Estes Park, Colorado, where he hashad a summer studio for many years and devoted much of his time and talent tocopper plate etchings of ...the majestic Rocky Mountains that so inspired him.Byxbe was honored with memberships in the Chicago Society of Etchers, MiniaturePrint Society of Kansas City, Missouri, and Northwest Printmakers of Seattle, Washington. He is represented in the permanent collection of the NationalGallery of Arts, at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and theLibrary of Congress, at Washington, D.C.
The original hand-signed etching offered here is a lovely example of Byxbe’swork and depicts a group of aspens growing on a hillside above Fish Creek nearSteamboat Springs, Colorado. The title of the print, “Longs from Fish Creek, ”is written in pencil in the lower left, and the artist’s full signature is alsowritten pencil in the lower right. The etching is matted and framed under glassin a beautifully carved wood frame that appears to be Cherrywood. The visible imagemeasures approximately 5.5” x 6.75”, and the overall framed dimensions measureapproximately 16.25” x 14.25”. The overall condition of the etching is verygood, with no evidence of foxing or toning on the image. This is a beautifuloriginal etching by a well-known and well-collected Western artist.
