This bear shape was carved from a solid cluster of Septarian, otherwise known as Dragon Stone, from Madagascar. These Septarian crystals were formed about 100 million years ago. Decomposing sea shells had an attraction for the surrounding sediment, forming mud balls under t...he sea. Tide and wave action rolled these balls around, creating sedimentary balls of a larger size. As the ocean receded, the balls were left to dry and crack, allowing Calcite crystals to form within them. A thin wall of Calcite transformed into Aragonite, dividing the shale exteriors from the Calcite crystals. The name Septarian is derived from these dividing walls (septum in Latin.) This bear was then carved and polished from this material in Madagascar. The piece is cut flat on bottom allowing the piece to stand on its own. A fantastic polished carved Septarian animal for display!
