The Cairo geniza by Paul E KahleLANGUAGE: ENGLISHVG CONDITION, HARDCOVER In this volume of lectures there are three transcribed teachings. The first deals with Hebrew Liturgical literature. The second The Hebrew text of the Bible. The third with translations of the Bible. Published by the British Academy in 1941, this series of lectures is referenced in studies by Weil, (noted in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) and the editors of the 1973 revision of the Codex Leningradensis that they named ...Biblia Hebraica Leningradensia. The latter is an example of what P. Kahle argues that the masoretes accomplished, and covers this in the section dealing with the Hebrew text of the Tanach.

This book is a sheer pleasure to read. Kahle's clarity, the completeness of his explanations make the material invaluable. His words come through to provoke the student not to look away from the 'why' of the seeming mysterious odd forms of words. The search for origins is the ultimate mystery quest for the Torah scholar and his (Kahle's) presentation is infectious, but he keeps adding more and then even some more! The coverage of accents is the most extensive I personally have encountered, the notes are almost a book in themselves.
The value of Kahle's expertise and experience with the Torah text and the representative texts is something missing in our day. No matter the level of 'expertise', Paul Kahle, was of a different generation of Torah scholar. The book in invaluable just for its lesson on how to teach such a complex subject. In reading this book, I found more answers and affirmations pertaining to my own research and inquiry concerning the masoretes and their editing in 10 pages, than I have found in 50 books dealing with the subject. His breadth and inclusion of examples from related material is without equal, IMHO.
I know this book is OOP, and was limited in its scope and audience to begin with, but if you are deep into textual exegesis in the Torah - find this book and put it into your library!
