KAWANABE KYOSAI 1831-1889 A fantastic original multi-color woodblock print, "Night Watchmen Hounded by Barking Dogs." From Kyosai's Comic Drawings, "Ghosts & Oni Demons, " Kyosai Gafu Sohen, Vol I, preface dated Ansei VI, 1860. Publisher Nakamura Sataro [Kinkado]. Signed Oju Kyosai. Image Chubon 22.6 x 16 cm, on sturdy washi paper. Extremely rare, seldom seen, and much sought-after series of some o...f Kyosai's most fantastic color woodblocks. Some very light surface smudges and page-turning handling marks along bottom margin as pictured. Not backed. Very small wormholes in the upper and lower margins (not into the image) which have been professionally repaired with small strips of the same washi paper. [Not visible. When the print is matted and framed to the border lines these slight repairs will not show.] In otherwise generally good condition and good strong color for its great age.
