Deagan Dinner Chimes are a wonderful trip to days gone by with historical significance in American Railroad and American Broadcasting. This is a JC Deagan Dinner Chime. It is missing it's label, but the assembly is unique to the Deagan chimes.
This series of chimes was used by NBC as a way to distinguish themselves with a particular sound. The notes C-E-G were struck at 59 minutes 30 seconds, and 29 minutes 30 seconds past the hour during... each broadcast. When you play the chimes you will hear the well known NBC "sound logo". The chimes have a beautiful rich tone.
JC Deagan was the custom manufacturer of "Studio" chimes for NBC. The bars are mounted on a decorative wood resonator box that has crown molding wood pieces.
These chimes were also used on passenger trains to announce dinner was being served.A friend remembers that when he sailed from Europe to the US on a military passenger ship as a child, they used these chimes to call everyone to dinner. They could also be found in hotels, cruise ships and private homes.
The chimes are well secured to the dark finish wood sound box. The chimes do have some tarnish that I have not tried to clean. The chimes also are numbered. The sound box is solid, but does have slight warping to the back cover as you can see in the picture. A hammer or striker is included with the chimes. There are two hangers on the back of the box for hanging the chimes on the wall.
The box with the chimes measures 11.5" long, 10" wide and 3.5" tall to the top of the chimes.
Wonderful railroad, television, ship collectible. Fun piece to call the family to dinner.
