-- El Queeno --
that once held cigars made in Pennsylvania!
Dating this Cigar Box is somewhat difficult. Online I found a photograph showing some of the El Queeno employees and that photo is dated 1914-1915. I also found something dated 1919, and found a legal action that says on June 1, 1944 the company in Chisholm changed its name to El Queeno Cigar Company -- I have no clue what the name... was before that time, but it appears to have been El Queeno something in the early 1900s.
True Boite Nature box made of wood, has two very uniquely shaped rear hinges (1930s Art Deco?), a cool swinging latch closure, four wood collars inside and dovetail corners.
Top of box reads, "El Queeno Hand Made Cigars." Inside cover reads, "El Queeno hand made cigars, mild, all imported, long filler." Both ends of box read, "Hand made." Front of box is hard to read, but I can make out "Perfecto." Bottom of box partially reads, "Fact. No. 217, 1st Dist. of Pa." and "...manufactured to retail at not more than five cents each..."
Box measures approximately 9 5/8" wide, just over 6 3/4" front to back, and just over 2 3/4" tall.
Box is in solid condition, hinges are sturdy and locking mechanism works well. Dark discoloration on most of the box as seen in photographs. Looks like a dab of glue or something like it dried clear on top of box. Part of a paper label inside box. Please see all the photographs for best description of the vintage cigar box, and let me know if you have any questions. This box came from just up the road from where I live, and the city of Virginia, Minnesota -- next to Chisholm -- is known as The Queen City.
