EARLY FRENCH SMALLSWORD, C. LATE 17th CENTURY
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:49434 |
Offered is a very nice, rare and interesting French smallsword. Hilt in bronze (probably silvered at one time) with classical design motif and displaying late 17th century characteristics such as a lovely channeled grip (the grip bars are sadly missing, but these can be easily restored if the new owner desires), a generous squared knuckle bow and large pas d’ane. 38” overall. The 31 1/4” blade in deeply fullered triangular form, which may suggest an 18th century... refitting. The last photo is provided only to illustrate what the grip bars look like on another contemporary sword and the sword shown there is not included in this auction. Blade slightly loose but this is often the case on swords of this great age. Absolutely original and authentic! Absurd start price and no reserve!!
