The red globe suggests it is a factory warning light.
It is heavy and solid.
Two (2) holes at the base for mounting with bolts.
The manufacturer's metal tag reads: Appleton Electric Co., Chicago, Ill. USA / To Relamp Unscrew Entire Globe Unit / Type PDE.
I searched the internet but could not find a copy of this light. More modern ones from Appleton show them being used on ceilings ab...ove doorways.
I could not locate a date of manufacture. The style suggests the 1950-1960 era.
