This scarce pin was issued in the United States to Spanish speaking members of the SOCIALIST PARTY of AMERICA in the very early 1900s. It has great graphics of the Socialist Party emblem of a hand and arm holding a torch. The Social Democratic Party of America, which merged into the SPA, used the same emblem. It reads in Spanish: Partido Socialista. (Socialist Party in English).
The Socialist Party of America (SPA) was asocialist political party in the United States formed in 1900 by amerger between the three-year-old Social Democratic Party of America anddisaffected elements of the Daniel De Leon's Socialist Labor Party of America, which hadsplit from the main organization in 1899.In the first decades of the 20th century, it drewsignificant support from many different groups, including trade unionists, progressive social reformers, populist farmers and immigrants. Eugene V. Debs, its presidential candidate in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912 and 1920, won over 900, 000votes in the elections of 1912 and 1920, while the party also elected two congressmento the House of Representatives (Victor L. Berger and Meyer London), dozens ofstate legislators, more than a hundred mayors, and countless lesser officials. The party's staunch opposition to American involvementin World War I, although welcomed by many, also led to prominent defections, officialrepression, and vigilante persecution. The organization was further shatteredby a factional war over how to respond to the October Revolution in the RussianRepublic in 1917 and the establishment of the Communist International in1919—many members left the party in favor of the Communist Party USA.This underground pinback button pin or badge relates to the Hippie (or Hippy ) Counterculture Movement of the psychedelic Sixties (1960s and Seventies (1970s).
