This beautiful check writer was patented in 1895 in the U.S. and in Germany. It is in great condition visibly, other than an area on the check holder where the silver coating has worn off. There is a dial in the center that moves in a circular motion so that the correct number can be lined up before depressing the lever that will create the tiny circular cut outs on the check. The check which is placed under the lever mentioned above is slowly moved forward with each imprin...ting of a number, so that it's lined up for the next impression.
This printer worked perfectly when I bought it in an antique store about 25 years ago. Now, the numbers don't print as they used to --only a few of the cut-outs appear when each number is depressed and there is some sticking. You can see how it now imprints looking at the last photo. I don't know why this happened, but I think someone who is mechanically inclined could probably repair it. I know it worked perfectly when I bought it, and if it could be fixed it would be a valuable item again! If not, it's still a nice display piece with a lot of history.
