STIFEL WABASH STRIPE COVERALL PLAY SUITThis listing is for an incredible, rare find. It comes from the deadstock of a General Store in rural Pennsylvania which opened in the late 1880s and was located on a railroad line. The garment is a railroad coveralls play suit for a child made by the Slipova Company of Baltimore, Maryland and is probably about 100 years old. It is made of Stifel indigo Wabash dot stripe fabric and has the Boot Stamp logo on the reverse. It is also stamped "Play S...uits", so presumably Stifel made a fabric just for that purpose (photo 2 & 3). It is a lighter weight fabric than the other garment I have listed. Work wear made of Stifel indigo wabash stripe fabric is extremely rare to find in any condition, and almost unheard of in deadstock condition.
It has a cloth tag sewn to the back of the neck and also a paper label with a guarantee (photo 3). The photos show the suit front and back, both right side and inside out so you can see the construction and placement of the Stifel stamps.
It fastens up the front with 5 metal buttons which are embossed with "Slipova (Reg)" and sewn on. They look to be aluminum. The facing of the button placket is a pink pain woven material. There are two side pockets and a breast pocket on the front, and one patch pocket on the back. It has a Peter Pan style collar.
It is tagged a size 12 (presumably for a 12 year old boy), but might fit a very small man or woman.
Since vintage sizing can vary, please use the actual measurements of the garment given below to determine if they will fit you. Compare these measurements to a similar item you have that fits well. Measurements are taken with the garment lying flat.
Shoulder to shoulder: (measured side to side at shoulder seam) = 13 1/2 inches
Sleeve length (measured from shoulder seam to end of sleeve cuff) = 17 1/2 inches
Neck Opening: (measured with tape measure along inside collar with collar buttoned) = 14 inches
Length of Upper Body: (measured from back of collar to top of waist band) = 14 1/2 inches
Waist: (measured side to side along band at waist) = 17 inches
Hips: (measured side to side at just above the start of the leg) = 19 inches. (This is about 1" below the bottom of the fly).
Rise: (measured from top of waist band to center crotch seam) = 10 1/2 inches
Inseam Length: (measured from center crotch seam to bottom of leg hem) = 20 1/2 inches
Width of thigh: (measured side to side below crotch seam) = 9 1/2 inches
Width of leg opening at cuff: (measured side to side at hem) = 9 inches
Overall Length of Garment: (measured from back of collar to bottom of pant leg) = 46 inches
It is very good condition, quite remarkable for an item of this age. The fabric is strong and there are no areas of fading and no rips or tears. The black fabric seam binding in the back of the neck is frayed in one area (photo 11). There is some minor storage dust in areas and a "dusty" smell, but no mildew or other objectionable odors. The buttons have some whitish oxidation on the backs. There is a spot on the left sleeve near the cuff where there is an extra dot that is out of the stripe (photo 11). The seam on the back of the left shoulder is not stitched properly (photo 12).
