Like many of you, we will not be seeing our loved ones this Christmas… There won’t be any family around the tree o...pening presents on Christmas morning and there won’t be much of a New Year’s celebration… We are foregoing the gatherings this year because, as Charles Dickens told us, the true meaning of Christmas involves caring for and about our fellow man. By Christmas day over 320, 000 fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, grandmothers, grandfathers, friends and strangers will have been taken from us all by this horrific Pandemic and the very least we can do is protect others from dying by staying home and not contributing to the suffering of our fellow man by contributing to the spread of the virus. Next Christmas will come soon enough and it will be THE MOST JOYOUS EVER!!! Until then we can give up a few small pleasures to save a life or two.

In all those years we have never asked you, our friends, to do anything special during the Holiday Season but this year we are making an exception – PLEASE – Stay Home – Be Safe – This Too Shall Pass and we will all meet on the other side!!!MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!Rare and charming, 1890’s Native American Plains Indian / Santee Sioux Hand Carved, Catlinite Charm / Whimsy in the form of a Straight Razor.
This expertly carved and simply wonderful, diminutive size, hand carved Whimsy was made to be an attachment on a Charm Bracelet or as a drop on some other item. It measures approx. 1 1/2” long and 5/8” across at its widest point. There is a small hole carved at the butt end of the Blade and it was by this hole that the Whimsy would be attached to a Charm Bracelet. The surface of the blade features sgraffito decoration in the manner of the Santee Sioux.
Although this Barber’s Straight Razor Curio Charm / Whimsy is not dated, it came to us with a number of similar Sioux Carved, Catlinite Charms in various forms and some of those Charms are dated by the carver with dates in the 1890’s (1894, 1896 and 1896). It appears that these Charms were either collected or given as gifts over a series of years and likely originally formed a simply amazing Charm Bracelet with Carved Catlinite Charms. Carved Catlinite Items such as this Charm were produced in the late 19th and early 20th century by a number of Northern Plains Tribes and sold to tourists who traveled to the area.
This beautiful, hand carved Catlinite Whimsy came to us from a Sinking Springs, Ohio Estate and was collected by "Chief" R. Deerfoot (1871-1959) – the noted Cherokee Evangelist and World War I Major who was the first Native American to pilot a United states Military Airplane.
This wonderful Sioux Catlinite Curio Charm Whimsey was collected by Chief R. Kuski Toscoa Deerfoot (1871-1959). According to Chief R. Deerfoot's obituary (1871-1959), he was a "noted evangelist" who claims Cherokee descent, was a Major during World War I, and was "said to have been the first Indian to pilot an airplane for the government." In addition to his military service, he "devoted his life to evangelical work all over the world." Despite his supposed military and evangelical notoriety, an article in The Tennessean Newspaper, dated Feb. 19, 1948 reports that Deerfoot was "placed under a suspended six year sentence for practicing medicine without a license in Rossville, Georgia" and "promised to vanish from the Georgia scene." He is buried in the Arlington Memorial Gardens, Cincinnati, Ohio.
During his Evangelical travels among Native American settlements, Chief R. Deerfoot amassed a significant collection of late 19th and early 20th century Indian Artifacts many of which eventually made there way to the Sinking Springs, Ohio Estate from which this Catlinite Straight Razor Charm was acquired.
This fascinating and very attractive Catlinite Straight Razor Shaped Curio Charm / Whimsy is in excellent condition. There are no chips, breaks, cracks, physical damage or repairs of any kind. The surface has a warm, age appropriate patina and the Charm is simply beautiful.
