Masawkatsina is the Katsina form of the spirit being who welcomed Hopis to this world and taught them how to plant and survive in the desert. He is a figure of great power as the God of the surface world and God of death. He is the only Katsina who can perform after the others “go home” in July. He either wears the striped blanket as this doll does or a rabbit skin blanket. His face represents a skull that is topped with prayer sticks or pahos. This doll is 8 ½” high to the top ...of the head and 10 ½” tall total. It is a wall hanging doll. This doll was carved by Waylon Namingha, Jr., one of a number of excellent carvers who work in the traditional style. Junior, as he is known to his friends, lives in Kiqötsmovi, Third Mesa, Arizona. He signed the doll with his Bear Clan mark.
