Original Rare Mathew B. Brady photo of Confederate GeneralRobert E. Lee. Taken in April 1865 on the back porch of his home a few daysafter he signed the Confederate Surrender & 2 days after PresidentLincoln’s Assassination. Photo is cut down & put into an antique clear glasspaperweight with green felt sealed back. We have not opened the back. Glassmeasures 4 ¼” x 2 ¾”. Please review photos to verify condition.Internet on photo: Confederate General Robert E, Leesurr...endered his army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox CourtHouse, Virginia, April 9, 1865. As soon as Mathew Brady heard that Lee had leftAppomattox and returned to Richmond, He headed there with his camera equipment.Through the kindness of Mrs. Lee and a Confederate Colonel, Bradly receivedpermission to photograph the General on April 16, 1865. Brady’s Portrait ofGeneral Lee in the uniform he had worn at the surrender, holding his hat on hisown back porch is considered one of the most reflective wartime likenesses. Itwould be Brady’s last wartime photograph.
