This wonderful CDV Photo measures approx. 2 1/2" by 3 7/8" (including the original, square cornered card, gold rule border card mount). The CDV features a vignette, bust portrait of a Union Army Officer wearing an officer’s frock coat with shoulder straps id...entifying him as a Captain. The Officer is identified with a period pencil inscription on the reverse that reads “Captain Henry” (not much help in the Civil War Soldier Data base). The CDV came to us with a group of Cavalrymen CDV’s removed from the same album and all with Louisiana backmarks. We believe that “Captain Henry” is also a Cavalryman but we can not be 100% sure. The back of the mount carries the mark of the photographer – McPherson & Oliver of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In 1861 itinerant photographer William D. McPherson joined with another itinerate photographer by the name of Oliver and established a studio in Baton Rouge, Louisiana during the earliest months of the Confederate States of American at the onset of the Civil War. McPherson & Olive are best known for a portrait they took in 1862 of the grotesquely scarred back and face of a Louisiana Slave known only as "Gordon" - an Image that was published in "Harpers Weekly" and which shocked the sensibilities of the citizens of the Northern States when it was "presented" by abolitionists as an example of the horrors of slavery and its stark, physical effects on a human being of great dignity and poise.
McPherson & Oliver continued to document the War in Louisiana as well as New Orleans under the occupation of Union Forces. The documented the aftermath of the Siege and Fall of Port Hudson with their views of Fort Morgan included in the Official Report by General Delafield of the campaign. In the fall of 1864, McPherson & Oliver moved their studio from Baton Rouge to New Orleans and occupied a gallery at 133 Canal Street continuing to document the Union occupation. In 1865 McPherson & Oliver dissolved their partnership with McPherson continuing in business in New Orleans until his death (from yellow fever) on October 9th, 1867.
This rare and original, CDV Portrait Photo of a Union Army, Civil War Officer is in very good condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. While both the Photo and the mount are generally clean and crisp, the card mount is slightly trimmed at the bottom edge.
A very rare and original, 1860's CDV Photograph of a Civil War Union Army Captain and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
