The letter is 1 pg., part-printed, approx. 8" x 11", dated at South Framingham, Mass., May 12, 1898, with printed letterhead of the "TOWN OF FRAMINGHAM, OFFICE OF Board of Selectmen", to the Mayor of Somerville, Mass. with a ...handwritten addition at bottom left signed by Willis M. Ranney, Chairman of the Board of Selectment.
This letter is to the Mayor of Somerville, Mass., and has great content, written less than 3 weeks after the U.S. declared war on Spain, pointing out that many Massachusetts towns have men in various regiments now at Camp Dewey, but are far from the route these men will take when they leave for the war - a route that will take them to the railroad station at South Framingham - and invite them to make "a joint demonstration in the form of an escort between the camp and railroad station at South Framingham", which "would be a courteous and pleasing feature to both soldiers and citizens". The letter requests that each town limit its delegation to 250 people, and that "the representation be composed of business men carrying a banner with the name of the town or city, occasion, etc., represented thereon, or some distinguishing feature in dress, Grand Army posts, and fraternal societies". They ask that the towns make preparations now, so that they will be able to come to So. Framingham "as soon as orders are issued by the U.S. Government for the troops to leave for the front"
Concludes with a list of the "cities and towns having companies in the several regiments now at camp Dewey" - men from Somerville are listed in Co. M of the 8th Regiment - and Chairman Ranney wrote a note to the Mayor of Somerville at the bottom:
"We can advise if desired when the 8th receives orders to leave Camp Dewey.
Very truly,
Willis M. Ranney, Chairman".
