from Oaxaca, Mexico!This striking witch sculpture, painted with a brilliant red dress, is the work of Oaxacan wood carver Ana Xuana. It is hand-carved, hand-painted and signed by the artist. Note the beautiful detail in the floral pattern on her dress. This figure is carved from one block of wood (the broom is separate), and it measures 8 inches tall.HISTORY: These colorful sculptures are made in Mexico's sout...hern heartland state of Oaxaca (pronounced wa-HAH-kah). The artisans are proud descendants of the pre-Columbian Zapotec culture. They make their figures from the twisted branches of the copalillo tree, which grows on the hills nearby. The wood is lightweight, easily workable and sands to a smooth finish. The workers cut branches with machetes, then sculpt the finer details with pocketknives. Creating woodcarvings is often a family effort -- fathers carve, children help with sanding, while wives paint the vivid, detailed patterns.
