Mabie Todd Swan New York BCHR No. 5 Ultra RARE COMPACT WW1 model Fountain Pen 1914-1918. 14K M Flex Nib. Superb pen.
Made in New York, USA 1914-18. This wonderful simple pen is a genuine piece of fountain pen history. It is a true utilitarian product of its time. It has ZERO ostentation or bling to detract from its purity of purpose. Minimalist simplicity at its finest. Very clever design. Pure. Rugged and yet quietly Handsome. This pen is all about the business of writing and making the... strongest pen possible. This RARE pen is very unique. It is a short version of the RARE Number 5. The Number 5 are normally 6inch or 14cm long when capped. However this is an impractical size to fit in pocket or kit bag etc if a soldier. So a request was made to have a Short version made that actually fit inside shirt chest pocket. This compact version is only 12cm or 4.8inch capped.. However to think of this pen as short it to misunderstand it unique 1st of a kind design. As when posted cap on tail end ready to write it is Longer than a 1950's Montblanc 146 and a 149. It is a full size SENIOR pen once posted ready to write. It has a HUGE size 5 nib. Phenomenal flex writer full of personality. VERY rare to find MINT number 5 nib. Very rare number nib for a Swan pen. VERY few of these pens were made. Connoisseur grade collectable.
The pen has no cracks, splits or repairs etc. The BCHR (Black Chassed Hard Rubber) is amazing. Thick and heavy like no other BCHR pens. These chaps were built to last. VERY robust. Tanks. The Cap is uniquely the same length as the entire Barrel. It is the longest cap to barrel ratio I have ever seen. Fabulous original design. Perhaps the first ever little BIG pen.
This is an Eye Dropper of Pipette filler system. To fill could not be any easier. Simply unscrew off the front section (see photo 7). Now squirt ink directly inside the barrel until 3/4 full. Screw front section back on. Done. takes less than 5 seconds and holds a huge amount of ink. Far more than a 149, 58, 139, 18, 56 etc etc oversize pens for example. Because the whole barrel is this pens ink reserve. I will include a pipette to get you started. Fabulous pen. Rocking horse manure RARE!
