Being offered is a British Royal Air Force, 56th Squadron Wall Plaque. I believe it is a WWII vintage or later. Approximate size is 6-3/4" x 9-3/4" x 7/8" thick wood - - most likely Oak or Maple. The RAF 56th Squadron has a rich history, having been established around 1917, it fought in WWI, WWII and was one of the last remaining units to have fought in the Battle of Britain, and still remain active. The Squaron's motto "QUID SI COELUM RUAT" is latin for "...Do Your Duty Though Heavens Fall." The distinctive unit insignia in the center of plaque, is a Phoenix. The mythical bird which continues to rise after having been burned or destroyed.
