COMPOSITION & SIZENun antique Trinity crucifix.Aluminum with ebony wood inlay, beautiful fine detail silver Corpus, INRI plaque, approx. 4 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches tall.Back has at center the Bleeding Sacred Heart pierced by a sword and surrounded by the Crown of thorns.
Around the turn of the century and late 1800s, a new metal called 'aluminum' was very popular to strike medals and crosses, with the religious who wore the...m as it was so much lighter in weight. Aluminum crosses with inserts may be dated from about 1889 on. It is interesting to note that when aluminum was first extracted (around 1787) it was considered a precious metal and sold for $1200 per kilogram by 1852.
