How to recognize is the vintage (1880-1930) watch movement original Vacheron Constantin or not.
by Alexander F. Zakutskyy (Ebay user alexandr6930)
A) Observing a back view of the movement with an attention to the following details:
1. Hairspring stood mount. It must looks like one on the photo bellow:
And example on the old 1880s movement :
This rule has exception: the hairspring stood mount may have a such design:
But only on the exactly such movement that size is about 38 mm:
If the vintage movement you are looking on has the stood mount of other design it is not Vacheron Constantin (or the stood mount is not original)
2. Dial mount. Dial on vintage Vacheron Constantin movement can be fixed either on a dial ring (it is visible only on a movement without a case or on screws that are inside tubes on a dial. For big movements 41-45 mm tubes are more common. Such mount were used only by Vacheron Constantin ! No other maker use such mount. Please see example on the photo below:
If dial mount has a space for legs and screw on the side like on most other vintage movements it is not Vacheron Constantin movement.
On the photo below original enamel VC dial on the mount ring
3. Small movements up to 36 mm usually has winding wheels on bridges, and specific mount with a 3 and 5 screws. Please see an example on the photo below (as well as a right stood mount , dial mount screws inside tubes)
If winding wheels that are on top of bridges mounted in other way ( on 2 screws and so on) that is not VC movement.
B) The movement under a dial.
1. Cap jewels always have such design: There are no exception. If the movement has different (round and etc) cap jewels it is for sure not VC movement.
2. The most common design of the small bridge with two small wheels on the time setting mechanism :
C) Additional
1. The micro-regulator on the photo below is patented by VC in 1884 and appears only on VC 21 jewels movements. If you see such it means that this is definitely VC movement. But if the movement has other micro-regulator or does not have any it mean nothing, it still can be original VC.
2. Dark purple screws like on the photo above are very common on VC movement and rare on other movements. 3. Serial number must be on both sides of the movement. Exception possible only for high complicated movements (repeaters etc).
Please feel free to ask any questions about vintage VC movements, parts, repair, re-casing (marriage) .
