This delightful milliners hat block or stretcher was used to manufacture hats, the size could be altered by turning the cast iron handle and screw, which in turn, opens the block.The block has a wonderful depth of colour and a patina that only comes with age and years of use, however, there are the usual marks, scuffs, stains and scratches to the block you would expect from a well used item. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs.The screw mechanism turns smoothly and i...t still moves along fine, however, it doesn't shut fully. It has the original ivorine size gauge marked in centimetres and inches and its' patent number. The numbering and the scale is still clear and legible.It measures 34 cm (13 1/2 inches) high. The base measures 31 cm (12 inches) x 17 cm (6 3/4 inches).This is a super piece of social history that would look great as a display item or could still be used.
