DESCRIPTION – Havelock– “A cloth covering for a cap, having a flap to cover and protect the back ofthe neck.” DuringWorld War II members of the WAVES* (commissioned officers, midshipmen, and enlisted)were required to have at least one havelock in their uniform inventory, usuallymade of wool. It was supposed to bewater-repellant. A lightweight version was optional. The havelock was worn with the navy blueraincoat-overcoat. *WAVES – Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service / Women’sReserve From the 1943 Navy women’s uniform regulations -HAVELOCK. (Rain hat cover). Thisgarment shall be made of the same Navy blue, water repellent material as theraincoat-overcoat. The havelock shall be constructed to fit over the hat, thehat brim fitting into a flap in front of havelock brim, side of havelock shallbe cut full to hang down to shoulders of raincoat. With a lightweight raincoat, a lightweight waterproof fabric may be used for the havelock. This havelock is black in color and is dated 1980. Unlike the contemporary Army versions ingreen and black, this havelock has no fasteners to hold it closed at thethroat. It hangs loosely at the sides ofthe head, held on by the brim of the cap inserted into the bill of thehavelock. Thelabel reads:HAVELOCK, WOMAN’S 50% COTTON / 50% POLYESTERDLA100-80-C-2268SIZE 22 1/2 Theservicemember’s name is printed in ink on the reverse. Her initials are alsostenciled in white on the underside of the brim of the havelock. Havelockswere not worn by members of the Navy Nurse Corps (NNC) during WWII due to theshape of their caps. Dimensions: 16 inches from top of crown to bottom of hem VERYGOOD used condition. Norips, tears, or stains. Label is clear and bright. Thisis a used item and may exhibit signs of wear and use.
