Original woodblock print by modern Japanese artist KAN KAWADA (1927-1999). Dimensions of paper are 18" x 25". It appears to be a temple and it looks like the inside is on fire to me. I've searched but haven't seen this print come up for auction before in the US. Kawada was a 20th century Japanese artist who produced graphically striking prints from the 1970's forward. A native of Tokyo, Kawada studied with Serizawa Keisuke, a master of the katazome or stencil-dyeing process. He graduat...ed from the Ochanomizu Bunka Gakuin Art Institute in Tokyo. Kawada also created woodblock prints, exhibiting widely and earing prizes for his bold designs, including the Grand Prize at the Nitten Exhibition in 1992.His pronounced approach to depicting traditional Japanese architecture and street scenes produces stark imagery with strong contrasting forms and color.
